This is to do with installing SIMS 4 on a Windows 10 PC, along with Origin.
Origin is some sort of interface application designed to flog you other stuff related to Sims 4.

If, after you have installed Origin and Sims 4, you can’t get it to work and you get the above message then this because the installation disks you have for Sims 4 are bundled with an older version of Origin. Read The Solution section below to see how to fix this.

I don’t know if there are just a few old stock items of Sims 4 disks around or this is what you get as standard. I bought Sims 4, for PC, for my daughter to play over the school Easter holidays. I bought it on disks, rather than the download version, from an Ebay vendor. Probably serves me right, trying to save a couple quid over the Amazon price. You may find that the installation media from Amazon does come bundled with the updated version of Origin, maybe.

Please click on the Picture of Sims 4 to see it at the Amazon website. Thankyou.

The Solution

Anyway, if you get the above error then you need to uninstall Origin and download and install the newer version. Go to Control Panel (type control panel in Cortana), select Programs and Features. Then find Origin and uninstall it and re-start your PC. Leave the Sims 4 program. That’ll be fine.

Now go to https://www.origin.com/gbr/en-us/store/download , Select the option “Download from Windows 7 service pack 1 or later” and you will find a file called OriginThinSetup.exe in your downloads folder. (It might not show the .exe extension on your computer). If you don’t know how to get to your downloads folder then hold the windows key down and press the e key. Downloads is on the column on the left.

Double click on the file to install it. Or, better still, right-click on it and select “Run as Administrator”, might be best, you never know. After it has installed, you will see immediately that this version is different from the old version of Origin. Reboot your PC again.

If all is well and you have got yourself an Origin account and you have correctly input the activation code for Sims 4, then you can now just click on the desktop icon for Sims 4.

A Bit Extra: Fine Tuning

SIMS4 DESKTOP ICONS
SIMS4 DESKTOP ICONS

By default, the desktop icon runs the 32-bit version of Sims 4. If you want to also have the 64-bit version available to you then copy the desktop icon, so you now have two of them. Rename one of them Sims 4 32-bit and the other one Sims 4 64-bit. Now, right-click the Sims 4 64-bit icon and select properties. Then in target you probably have “C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4\Game\Bin\TS4.exe”, change the executable to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4\Game\Bin\TS4_x64.exe” (i.e. just add the _x64 part to the file name). Click apply and then exit. See how you get along with the 64-bit version, you can always go back to the 32 bit if you need to.
